WATCH LIVE: A fire in Evanston

CALGARY- A massive fire broke out over the supper hour in northwest Calgary.

The blaze was sparked around 5:30 p.m. in the community of Evanston, and a huge plume of black smoke could be seen around the city.

Photos showed a home fully engulfed in flames, while footage from the Global News helicopter showed the fire spread to at least one neighbouring home.

Firefighters were able to contain it within about 20 minutes, and are currently working to make sure the fire is fully extinguished and put out hot spots.

Gold-medal bobsledders Kaillie Humphries and Heather Moyse have been named Canada’s flag bearers for the closing ceremony of the Sochi Winter Olympics.

Canada’s bobsleigh queens successfully defended their gold medal from Vancouver in Sochi, coming from behind to beat the Americans by 0.12 seconds.

“Wow. It’s truly an honour to represent what our Canadian athletes are all about,” Moyse said. “If we look back to the Canadian team’s performance back in Vancouver (in 2010) we can see that a new culture of winning has truly emerged.”

Canada took a 3-0 lead over Sweden in the third period of the men’s gold medal hockey game in Sochi on Sunday.

Jonathan Toews netted the Canada first goal in the first period. Team captain Sidney Crosbie scored Canada’s second goal – and his first of the tournament – on a breakaway in the second period. Chris Kunitz scored his first of the tournament in the third.

Jones and Canadian team tied 3-3 against Sweden in women’s curling gold medal match


It’s now 4-3 Canada.

Jennifer Jones and the Canadian curling team are tied 3-3 after six ends in the gold-medal match in Sochi.

The Swedish team was behind 3-1 going into the 5th end. They had a chance at scoring 3 with their last rock but were only able to get 2 to tie the game.

“A little bit of a sigh of relief there,” Jones told CBC after the 5th end. There was no score in the 6th end.

Sweden had a chance at a double in the 2nd end, but instead stuck a Canadian rock right near the button. They had another chance to take it out – and again, nudged it closer. A great Swedish shot later in the end left Jones with few options, though, and Sweden took a shot to take out the troublesome stone and take the end.

Too little, too late; Finland beats Russia 3-1 in elimination hockey

It’s do or die time in the men’s Olympic hockey tournament. But for the host team, it was too little too late.

Finland and Russia faced off in their first elimination game at the Sochi Winter Olympics on Wednesday.

Going into the third period with a two-goal deficit, Russia turned it on, but were unable to beat Tuukka Rask in net. Rask made 37 saves for the win.

Finland won the game, crushing any Russian hopes of a gold medal game in front of a home crowd. Finland will now face Sweden in the semifinals on Friday, who are the number one seed in the tournament.

Alex Ovechkin was essentially speechless after the game. He had struggled to reach the scoreboard throughout the Olympic tournament.
